ORSAINVILLE, Quebec – ORSAINVILLE, Quebec (AP) — Two inmates are dead and six injured in a riot that broke out at a prison in Orsainville, north of Quebec City.
Johanne Beausoleil, a spokeswoman with the provincial corrections service, said Thursday that the incident, involving 14 inmates, erupted in one of the wings of the prison Wednesday night.
Some of the prisoners set fire to a mattress and clothing during the scuffle. The bodies of two inmates were found after the blaze was extinguished.
The six injured inmates taken to a hospital with injuries that included smoke inhalation.
Beausoleil says officials do not yet know what caused the altercation.
The Orsainville detention center was also the scene of a riot in February 2008, which was apparently triggered by a smoking ban at the facility.
