BERLIN – Police say arsonists are suspected of setting fires at three empty buildings in Bavaria that had been earmarked to serve as accommodation for asylum seekers.

The fires broke out late Thursday evening in Vorra, near Nuremberg. Police said Friday that anti-foreigner slogans and swastikas were found daubed at one site.

There was no one in the buildings at the time. Police say the blazes were extinguished quickly but one firefighter was slightly injured.

Germany has seen a surge in asylum applications this year, partly because of the war in Syria. Cities and rural communities have been struggling to provide housing for the influx.
