The family of convicted kidnapper and rapist Ariel Castro says they are angry about how long it took the Warden to notify them of his death.
Castro was found hanging in his cell at the Correctional Reception Center in Orient, Ohio, about 9:20 p.m. Tuesday, the state’s Department of Corrections said.
According to spokesperson JoEllen Smith, prison medical staff tried to revive him but failed.
Castro was taken to The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center where he was pronounced dead at 10:52 p.m.
Castro’s brother-in-law, Juan Alicea, told CNN that the family was notified by the warden about 1 a.m. -- about 45 minutes after the media broke the story. According to Alicea, the family is angry that it learned about the death from media reports first.
Castro was in protective custody, meaning he was checked on every half an hour, but not on suicide watch – which would have required that he be checked on more frequently. Media reports say he hanged himself using his own bed sheets.
In an emailed statement, Smith said, “A thorough review of this incident is underway.
