Frigid temperatures are pouring into the Northeast after a powerful winter storm brought up to 2 feet of snow in some places over the weekend, creating dangerous travel conditions Monday with the risk of frostbite or hypothermia for anyone outdoors with exposed skin.
The National Weather Service's Weather Prediction Center said that frigid air from Canada has inundated the region in the wake of the storm.
"High temperatures today will be more than 20 degrees below normal across much of the Northeast," the NWS said. "The flow of frigid air over the Great Lakes will promote lake-effect snow as well as upslope snowfall over parts of the central Appalachians through this evening."
BITTER COLD SETS IN AS WINTER STORM IN NORTHEAST WREAKS HAVOC ON TRAVEL
The high winds combined with the frigid air created "dangerously low wind chills" early Monday.
"Dangerous cold in place this morning," the NWS Boston said. "Stay inside as much as feasible. If you much be outside, dress in layers and leave no exposed skin".
Temperatures feeling between -15 degrees in the New York area and -30 in Massachusetts were reported throughout the region early Monday.
"It's cold and you have to dress appropriately," Fox News Senior Meteorologist Janice Dean said Monday on "FOX & friends."
Freezing rain and more snow are expected in parts of New England and the Great Lakes. The bitter cold is expected to stymie travel once again with FlightAware reporting nearly 250 flights canceled as of early Monday morning.

Another storm system is already developing over the Rockies that could blanket the same region with more snow by the end of the week. The cold snap in the Northeast is expected to moderate by the middle of the week, according to Dean.
"The good news is things will warm up, relatively speaking, as we head through Tuesday," Dean said.
