An Army veteran accused of running his car into a crowd of pedestrians in California because he believed two of the people looked like they were Muslim or Indian did not enter a plea when he appeared in court.
Two hate crime charges were added to eight counts of attempted murder against 34-year-old Isaiah Peoples.
Police said he deliberately plowed his car into people at a Sunnyvale crosswalk in April.
District attorney Jeff Rosen says he is confident that a substantial motivating factor in the attack was Peoples' belief about the religions of several victims.
A 13-year-old girl, Dhriti Narayan, remains hospitalized on life support.
Peoples' mother said her son has struggled with PTSD since serving in Iraq from June 2005 to May 2006.
His attorney, Chuck Smith, did not immediately return a message seeking comment.

The disclosure came Thursday as prosecutors said they will add two hate crime allegations against 34-year-old Isaiah Peoples.
Peoples is also facing eight counts of attempted murder after police said he deliberately plowed his car into people at a Sunnyvale crosswalk last month.
A 13-year-old girl remains hospitalized on life support.
Peoples' mother said her son has struggled with PTSD since serving in Iraq from June 2005 to May 2006.
Peoples could enter a plea at a hearing expected later Thursday.

Prosecutors will file new hate crime charges against an Army veteran accused of eight counts of attempted murder after police said he deliberately plowed his car into pedestrians at a California crosswalk last month.
Santa Clara District Attorney's Office spokesman Sean Webby said Thursday that two hate crime allegations will be filed against 34-year-old Isaiah Joel Peoples, a veteran of the Iraq war.
Police say Peoples showed no remorse and told investigators he intentionally drove into pedestrians in Sunnyvale.
A 9-year-old boy and a 13-year-old girl were among the injured. The girl remains hospitalized on life support.
Peoples' mother said her son has struggled with PTSD.
A hearing in the case was set for later Thursday.
