A Mississippi police officer was injured in a "gunfight" Thursday with a suspect who shot at him from an abandoned home, authorities said.

Jackson police officers were responding to reports of people inside a park with guns around 5:30 p.m. when a suspect vehicle sped away as they approached, the Jackson Police Department told Fox News.

The vehicle was later discovered by officers with the driver's side door open. When they went to inspect it, a suspect on the porch of an abandoned home opened fire, authorities said. Officer Allen Mays was hit.

The suspect, identified a Nathaniel Garner, 25, ran back into the home and a search was launched.

Mays was rushed to a hospital where he underwent surgery. His injuries were not disclosed but he remains in stable condition.

Garner later turned himself in to authorities at a local church. He was accompanied by his mother, attorney and a pastor, police said.

He is being held in the Hinds County Detention Center. He faces two counts of aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer, shooting into an occupied vehicle and being a convicted felon in possession of a firearm.
