An apartment complex standoff in Indiana during which responding police officers were "met with continuous and indiscriminate gunfire" has ended after the suspect died while receiving treatment for his injuries, state police announced Thursday.

The individual – who has not yet been publicly identified – drew a massive police presence to the community in Kendallville on Wednesday night after law enforcement received reports of shots being fired there.

"Officers from [the] Kendallville Police Department and Indiana State Police responded immediately, and upon their arrival an unidentified male suspect began shooting at them from a second story apartment balcony at 645 Berry Lane," state police said in a news release. "There was an exchange of gunfire between the suspect and the officers. The suspect retreated into the apartment and continued firing multiple rounds at officers from inside the apartment."

Indiana State Police Sgt. Brian Walker told Fox News Digital that the suspect was armed "with a rifle."

The police presence then grew to include SWAT personnel and "once armored vehicles were on scene, officers were able to begin systematically evacuating the adjoining apartments and the neighboring apartment buildings, and then moving those residents to safety," according to authorities.

Indiana State Police said during the standoff, which lasted around 11 hours, "attempts to establish a line of communication with the suspect were unsuccessful, and the suspect never responded to officers' loudspeaker announcements and commands."

SWAT officers made entry to the apartment where the suspect had barricaded himself in around 6 a.m. this morning and he was taken into custody without incident.

"He was found suffering from an injury, but the extent of injury was not known. He was immediately attended to by on-scene paramedics, however all life saving measures were unsuccessful," state police said. "He succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene."

The suspect is believed to have fired hundreds of rounds during the ordeal, which included randomly shooting out of the building, the Kendallville News-Sun reported.

Indiana State Police will now investigate the incident, while the suspect is being examined by the Noble County Coroner.
