A student in the Baltimore area was shot in the back parking lot of a high school Tuesday afternoon and rushed to the hospital, police said. 

Baltimore County Police responded to the shooting at Catonsville High School in its namesake city around 3 p.m. after school had been let out for the day.  

The injured student was transferred to a hospital with injuries that police said did not appear life-threatening. They said they are continuing to look for the suspect.

Baltimore County Public Schools said it activated a lockdown while police responded and investigated.

"All afternoon activities and athletic practices and events are canceled," the district said in a statement to Fox News.

Police said earlier that parents could be reunified with their children by entering the main entrance of the school and students can be picked up at the front door. 

Local news stations showed footage of nearly a dozen police cars parked outside the school. 

Catonsville High School could not be reached for comment.

Catonsville is about a 20-minute drive west of downtown Baltimore.
