The San Jose Sharks signed center Tomas Hertl to an entry-level contract on Monday.

Hertl was selected by the Sharks in the first round (17th overall) of the 2012 NHL Draft.

He spent last season with HC Slavia Praha in the Czech Extraliga, where he led the team in goals (18) and points (30) in 43 games. In 11 postseason games, Hertl added three goals and five assists.

"Tomas has the tools and skill set to be an impactful player for our organization," Sharks general manager Doug Wilson said. "He has been a dominant player at every level he has played at in his career thus far, including playing against players older and more physically mature than him. We are tremendously excited to have Tomas come to training camp this fall and compete for a spot on our roster."

The 19-year-old Hertl represented the Czech Republic for the 2013 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championships.
