St. Louis Rams wide receiver Stedman Bailey was in stable condition at a South Florida hospital after being shot late Tuesday.
A statement from the Rams confirmed that Bailey was "involved in an incident" and that the team had spoken with him, but contained few other details.
NFL.com reported that Bailey was shot while sitting in a car with three family members in Miami Gardens, Fla. According to the report, another car pulled up alongside the Baileys' car and someone opened fire.
The report said Bailey was shot twice in the head and is due to undergo surgery later Wednesday. He is cooperating with police. Bailey's cousin, who was driving the car, suffered life-threatening injuries.
Bailey had caught 12 passes for 182 yards and a touchdown in the Rams' first eight games this season. He is currently serving a four-game suspension for violating the NFL's substance abuse policy and would have been eligible to return Dec. 13 against the Detroit Lions.
Bailey grew up in Miramar, Fla., near where the shooting occurred, and was drafted by St. Louis in the third round of the 2013 NFL Draft.
