EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) – New York Giants wide receiver Victor Cruz vowed months ago he would be returning to football this season. But he may have spoken too soon.
The popular salsa-dancing veteran announced that he will be having season-ending surgery on his left calf. The Giants had no immediate comment.
"This hurts. I worked so hard to come back from the patellar tendon surgery. I fought hard, day-in and day-out, rehab, physical work, strength work," he said in the video. "I felt like I was back to 100 percent. And then the calf happens. It's tough, it's a tough thing to go through physically, emotionally."
Cruz has not played in a game since tearing a patellar tendon against Philadelphia in October 2014. He reported to training camp, hoping to be ready for the season opener against Dallas. However, he injured the calf in mid-August and never practiced again.
Cruz plans to rehabilitate after the surgery and said his goal is to get back on the field. He told fans not to lose faith in him and that he will see them next season.
"I know God has a plan for me. I need to retool my brain, retool my body to get back to 100 percent," he said. "A full 100 percent, really attack this thing and come out the other end firing."
