Date-Krumm ousted 2012 champion Timea Babos of Hungary with a 6-4, 6-7 (4-7), 6-4 victory in the second round of the $500,000 event at Club Sonoma.
The 43-year-old was coming off Monday's 7-5, 6-2 win over Flavia Pennetta.
Former world No. 1 Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark, seeded third this week, beat France's Kristina Mladenovic 6-3, 6-4.
Serbia's Jovana Jaksic defeated Thailand's Luksika Kumkhum 3-6, 7-6 (7-5), 7-6 (7-2) and Czech Karolina Pliskova topped Croatia's Donna Vekic 4-6, 6-2, 6-3.
This week's winner will claim $111,389.
