House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, D-N.Y., said in a video issued on Monday that he accepted President Donald Trump's son-in-law Jared Kushner's request for a meeting.
The congressman said he "took it to discuss the affordability crisis that exists that is not a hoax."
Jeffries issued the video after reports of a meeting between him and Kushner sparked some left-wing backlash. They reportedly talked about possible issues of common ground

"No one is going to get a pass. We're gonna hold every single member of the Trump cartel accountable beginning on day one," he said.
Jeffries also touted House Democrats' efforts to fight the Trump administration.

"We're gonna follow the facts, apply the law, and be guided by the Constitution, beginning on day one, and hold the crooks accountable. And that's what we've done as House Democrats from the beginning of this Congress," he said, listing battles against the Trump administration regarding "tariffs," "Medicaid," "Epstein," "nutritional assistance," Obamacare, the Iran war, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) funding and "unprecedented corruption unleashed on the American people."
White House spokesperson Anna Kelly said in a statement provided to Fox News Digital on Tuesday, "This is the same, tired narrative that Democrats have pushed against President Trump, his family, and his administration for a decade. Jared Kushner’s personal business activities have nothing to do with his diplomatic engagements, which he conducts on a volunteer basis at the President’s request.
"His record of success in helping the President develop the Abraham Accords, resolve the GCC dispute, end the war between Israel and Hamas, launch the Board of Peace, bring Russia and Ukraine together for historic trilateral discussions, and more speaks for itself," Kelly declared in the statement.

While Republicans currently wield the House speaker's gavel, if Democrats win the House majority during the upcoming 2026 midterm elections, Jeffries would be a prime candidate for the role.
