Twin volunteers to donate kidney to sister after rogue strep infection

Twin sisters Amy and Becky Earley are described as “incredibly close” by friends who set up a GoFundMe page on their behalf, but their bond is about to get even more special as one prepares to donate a life-saving kidney to the other.

“For anyone that knows how incredibly close Amy and Becky are, it should come as no surprise that Becky hasn’t thought twice about offering to donate one of her kidneys to Amy,” friend Erin Watson posted on the North Carolina-based GoFundMe page.

The twins’ age was not disclosed in the post, but revealed that Amy was first diagnosed with IgA nephropathy after an untreated strep throat infection spread while in college. The first grade teacher was left with 30 percent kidney function, which she maintained with diet modification and medication, according to the post. However, in August, she contracted strep throat again and was left feeling weak despite recovering.

“In October, she found out that her kidney function had dropped significantly to 15 percent where she will need a transplant or will eventually need to be put on dialysis,” Watson posted on GoFundMe.

Becky, also a teacher, is in the final stages of extensive testing to confirm that her kidney is a match for Amy. The fundraising goal is seeking $50,000 to help cover costs of transplant that insurers do not typically provide.

“Amy is such a strong, selfless, and generous person and we would love to lighten the burden of all the medical expenses,” Watson posted in part. “Amy is blessed with such an amazing support system and we greatly appreciate your help during this time.”
