Almost a year after her death, Jenni Rivera’s presence is still felt in the Latin music world.
The late 43-year-old star was the big winner Wednesday night at the 2013 Billboard Mexican Music Awards in Los Angeles, where she was given seven awards posthumously, according to published reports.
She took home the all-important Artist of the Year award as well as female Artist of the Year; Digital Download Artist of the Year; Albums Artist of the Year and Banda Artist of the Year.
Rivera’s album “La Misma Gran Señora” – released in the U.S. a mere week after her death – won Album of the Year and Banda Album of the Year.
These are not the first accolade the Mexican-American singer has been awarded since her death in Dec. 9. In April, at the 2013 Billboard Latin Music Awards, Rivera was nominated for 18 awards and won six of them – more than any other artist that night.
Following Rivera on sheer number of awards Wednesday night was Gerardo Ortiz - who holds the records as the winner of most Billboard Mexican Music Awards with 17 – collected four honors this year: Male Artist of the Year, Songs Artist of the Year and Norteño Artist of the Year. His album “El Primer Ministro” earned an award for Norteño Album of the Year.
Other winners included La Arrolladora Banda el Limon de Rene Camacho, Joan Sebastian, and Voz De Mando. Los Tigres del Norte received the first ever Billboard “Leaders Award” in recognition of their leadership and their social activism.
