Rumors Of Gael García Bernal Split With His Wife, Dolores Fonzi, Confirmed

Another one bites the dust.

Gael García Bernal and wife Dolores Fonzi have reportedly gone their separate ways after nearly five years of marriage.

Rumors of their imminent split have recently swirled around the couple, and now the actor’s mother, Patricia Bernal, has confirmed the news to People en Español.

“We have a good relationship. (Gael) is doing well, the kids are doing well, Dolores is perfectly fine,” she told the magazine. “We are all good friends, we are all great, happy. Things are like this, but they are well.”

She added, “Decisions are made. We support each other as always. We must support each other ... Sometimes things work out or don’t work out, but we have to remain close.”

While neither García Bernal nor Fonzi have commented on the split, a source told E! News that the “Y Tu Mamá También” actor, who attended the 2014 Telluride Film Festival over the weekend, has been telling people that he and Fonzi ended their marriage and that he is splitting his time between his native Mexico and Argentina, where she lives with their two children.

Fonzi and García Bernal first met on the set of the 2001 film “Vidas Privadas,” although they did not start a romantic relationship until several years later.

The couple's son, Lazardo, was born in 2009 and daughter, Libertad, in 2011.

Fonzi made headlines earlier this year when she told pot culture magazine THC that she smokes marijuana on a regular basis – including in front of her children.

“I do what I need to do during the day,” she told the magazine. “I take the children to the garden. I feed them. I bathe them. I give them dinner. Then I smoke, and it’s how I break with everyday obligations. I use it to read, to see movies or sleep. They [my children] see it and realize that it is not a common cigarette.”

Her name was also involved in a bust of drug traffickers in Argentina where police said a “narco-pizzeria” alerted their drug customers that to get a stash they would have to use her name in the order.

Meanwhile, García Bernal has been promoting his latest film “Rosewater,” which marks the feature directorial debut of Jon Stewart. The film is based on the true story of Maziar Bahari, a London-based journalist who was imprisoned for 100 days in Iran and subjected to brutal interrogations after he was accused of being a spy.
