For Kristy Lee Cook’s latest song “Airborne Ranger Infantry” she teamed up with a special man in her life -- her dad.

The former "American Idol" contestant's new tune was inspired by four poems her father, Larry Cook, wrote about his experiences during the extraction period of the Vietnam War.

“I read them over and over again, and I always wanted to turn them into a song,” she told FOX 411. “It just took a few years to find the right partners to write the song with.”

Cook co-wrote the song with her father, and the two had help from songwriters Michael Logen and Luke Sheets as well. She said the poems gave her insight to father’s time serving in the military, something he rarely spoke about when she was growing up.

The lyrics of the song tell the story of a young soldier during war, and Cook said the topic was tough to sing about.

"Singing a song about men and women that have fought and served for our country and those who have lost their lives for us is very emotional - and I'm not an emotional person but there is a soft spot in my heart for our soldiers,” she said. “I feel very privileged to be able to sing something for them in return for their sacrifice for me."

And that’s not all she is doing to give back to those who serve in the military.

"When I had my hunting show ('Goin' Country'), I did a week-long trip in Alaska with the Wounded Warrior Project,” she said. “It was so amazing and I met so many people and learned so much.”

She said she hopes to do similar projects in the future.

“I would love to do a USO tour! I've done national anthems and various smaller things in the past but definitely want to do more," she said. "I would love to do as much as I can for them."
