Demi Lovato is bravely talking about her troubled relationship with her late father, Patrick Lovato.
The singer, who has battled an eating disorder as well as bipolar disorder, says, “I was very conflicted when he passed because he was abusive.”
“He was mean, but he wanted to be a good person. And he wanted to have his family … He knew he wasn’t capable of raising a family, and it was because of his mental illness,” she said in a behind-the-scenes interview for her new album, “Confident.”
“To know that it wasn’t fully his fault really was saddening to me, and I wanted to write about it. I wanted to process it.”
A year after Patrick’s 2013 death from cancer, Lovato, 23, honored him with several tweets.
“My dad suffered from severe mental illness so at least there’s peace in knowing he’s not suffering anymore,” she wrote.
