Fox411: Cindy Crawford announces retirement from modeling, says, 'I can't keep reinventing myself'

Aging wasn’t easy for supermodel Cindy Crawford.

“For me it was really hard; the idea of turning 50 was daunting,” the now 51-year-old told Dujour. “For so long I was the 20-year-old model on the cover of Vogue, or 25 or 30 — and then all of a sudden my daughter is becoming that.”

With Crawford’s blessing, 15-year-old Kaia Gerber has also pursued modeling — and she’s now one of fashion’s most sought-after talents. Crawford is content with her child’s growing success.

“I don’t want to spend my fifties trying to get back to where I was in my thirties,” she explained. “Even though, yes, maybe I would like my skin or my waistline to be the same, I’ve worked hard and evolved into this person.”

These days, Crawford is determined to pursue other projects beyond the runway. The fashion magazine added she enrolled last fall in a three-day financial boot camp for women at UCLA.

“I loved being in the classroom again,” said the former high school valedictorian. “It was especially nice to do it with other women. You don’t want to be embarrassed, asking a stupid question, but I think we all felt we were in a safe enough environment.”

Crawford is also aware the fashion world has changed since she first broke onto the scene in 1986 with a Vogue cover by Richard Avedon.

“Because of social media, you see that beauty isn’t rare,” she said. “Beauty is everywhere we look — I think that’s very empowering for women. Before we only had a handful of women who were appearing in magazines.

"Now you can go on Instagram and someone you’ve never heard of, who maybe only has one follower or maybe has nine million — you see they’re beautiful. Sometimes it’s the filter, but I think women are emerging through. I’m not stranger to filters, but women can recognize their own beauty.”
