Shakira might be hitting one of the largest stages this weekend at the World Cup, but a throwback video from her preteen years shows the talent that has taken her to the best stages around the world.

In the 15-minute clip posted to YouTube, the Colombian superstar is singing in a contest at her school in Barranquilla. According to the video time stamp, it was taped on Sept. 10, 1988, when Shakira was 12 years old.

Sporting darker hair, a pink shirt, white pans and a plaid beret, Shakira starts off by saying in Spanish: “First I would like to thank Social Services for helping all those people in Colombia. I would like to thank them for that and for the invitation to participate in the singing contest.”

The now 37-year-old then sings “Sin él” by Mexican-American singer Marisela, followed by an interpretation of Timbiriche’s “Quinceañera.” As her final, Shakira moves her hips to “Aatini al nay” by Lebanese singer and actress Fairuz.

This last song was made popular by Shakira during her “Oral Fixation Tour” in 2006.
