DETROIT – The Nissan IMs concept debuting at the Detroit Auto Show is a high-performance electric car with slick styling, a dashboard covered with digital displays and autonomous driving capability that previews the automaker’s upcoming models, but its most innovative feature may be the hump seat.
In the rear of the high-riding, suicide door-equipped sedan is a three-across bench that can be converted into a “Premier Seat” for just one.
By shuffling over to the middle and folding down the two outboard seatbacks, a passenger can turn it into an easy chair complete with a footrest.
Since the electric IMs doesn’t need a bump in the floor for a driveshaft, there’s more room for your legs than if the same kind of seat were situated directly behind one of the front seats, as found on some high-end luxury cars.
The seat has not been confirmed for production, and neither has the IMs as it is, but Nissan is planning to introduce seven new electric models by 2022, so the rules to shotgun may have to be rewritten soon.
