KARACHI, Pakistan – A Pakistani police officer says the country's Maritime Security Agency has arrested 38 Indian fishermen for violating its waters in the Arabian Sea.

Mohammad Anwar says the agency held the fishermen Thursday and handed them over to the police in the southern port city of Karachi.

Archrival neighbors Pakistan and India have fought three wars since the end of British rule in 1947.

Pakistani and Indian fishermen who ply the waters off the two countries' coasts are often arrested for allegedly violating territorial waters.

The Pakistani Foreign Ministry said in early January that 476 Indian fishermen were being held in Pakistani prisons.
