A few dozen youths smashed four storefronts and two bus stops and burned and damaged several cars, after small anti-government demonstrations by extreme left-wing and anarchist groups in central Athens.

No one was detained for the vandalism overnight Thursday to Friday in the Exarchia neighborhood, where such scenes are commonplace. The demonstrations by about 300 people against continued austerity were not the first protests against the left-wing government elected in January.

Earlier this month, dozens of protesters clashed with riot police outside a migrant detention center, protesting conditions and what they said was a delay in fulfilling government pledges to release the migrants.

In Thursday night's Athens violence, riot police kept a discreet distance, following government pledges to decrease police presence in Exarchia and refrain from clashing with protesters.
