MILAN – Italian authorities have arrested a leading member of the Neopolitan Camorra crime group, who was considered one of the country's most-dangerous criminals.
More than 100 agents and a helicopter swooped to arrest Francesco Matrone — known as "The Beast" — near Salerno in Italy's south on Friday.
Matrone, convicted of double homicide and sentenced to two life terms, has been on the run since 2007. He was on the Interior Ministry's list of top nine fugitives.
Italian media say authorities got a break in their search for Matrone when the 65-year-old contacted family members during the traditional Italian holiday week of Ferragosto.
