Brother of detained photojournalist says Egypt has set date for trial

CAIRO – The brother of a detained photojournalist says Egypt has set a date for the first session of his trial, more than two years after he was taken into custody.

Mohammed Abou-Zeid said Wednesday that the trial of his brother Mahmoud, known by his nickname Shawkan, is set to start on December 12, with charges including murder, attempted murder and possessing a firearm.

Shawkan was arrested in August 2013 while photographing the government's violent dispersal of a sit-in by supporters of ousted Islamist President Mohammed Morsi. Over 600 people were killed.

Judicial officials could not immediately be reached for comment.

In an April letter from prison, Shawkan said "I am a photojournalist, not a criminal. My indefinite detention is psychologically unbearable. Not even animals would survive in these conditions."
