TIRANA, Albania – Albanian police say they have arrested eight people for alleged arms trafficking to Syria.
Friday's arrests took place in Tirana, the capital, the nearby cities of Shijak and Durres. Police also seized seven automatic rifles, two shotguns, six pistols, five grenades and other ammunition.
Police said four other suspects remain at large. Police did not say how weapons were being shipped to Syria.
About two-thirds of Albanians are Muslim, and the country's religious leaders have appealed to believers not to join rebel groups in Syria.
However, scores of Albanians have gone to support Syrian insurgents and at least three have died.
