MANILA, Philippines -- The military says gunmen have killed six villagers and wounded others in the southern Philippines.

Lt. Col. Randolph Cabangbang said 10 armed men opened fire Thursday in Zamboanga del Sur province. They killed relatives of a government militiaman and some of the wounded were children.

He said the violence in Lapuyan township's Tininghalang village was led by Arnie Andi after the militiaman guided police in arresting Andi's brother. It was not immediately known why Andi's brother was arrested.

Cabangbang described the attackers as local criminals. Several armed groups operate in the province, including Muslim rebels, kidnappers and criminal gangs.

Also Thursday, four people including two children were hacked dead in northern Quezon province's Lopez township. Police say personal grudge could be a motive.
