An Old West gun battle re-enactor in South Dakota who fired live rounds instead of blanks during a show and wounded three onlookers has pleaded not guilty in federal court to illegally possessing a firearm.

Paul Doering has not been charged with shooting the three tourists during the June 17 show in Hill City. Prosecutors have not said why they didn't press more charges against the Summerset man, but a Hill City official said the shootings were apparently accidental.

The 49-year-old Doering pleaded not guilty Thursday to illegal firearms possession by a felon. The charge stems from a previous conviction.

Doering told the Rapid City Journal last month that the guns he used were borrowed and that he thought they contained blanks.
