HONOLULU – Residents of Saipan are without water and electricity and are rationing gasoline — four days after Typhoon Soudelor hit the most populated island in the U.S. territory of the Northern Marianas.
The commonwealth's delegate to U.S. Congress says it could be a month or two before power is restored. Gregorio Kilili Camacho Sablan says 10 generators are being shipped from Guam to power water pumps. There's a $50-per-vehicle limit on purchasing gasoline.
Sablan says it's the worst storm in 20 years for an area that's familiar with typhoons. There have been no reports of deaths or serious injury.
Resident Glen Hunter says he's getting frustrated about the lack of aid. He says many homes are devastated but major roads have been cleared.
The Red Cross says more than 500 people are in shelters.
