Police say a pickup truck driver has intentionally hit a trooper conducting a traffic stop along a southern New York highway, killing him instantly, and has been charged with murder.

They say Melrose, Florida, resident Almond Upton deliberately swerved his truck into Trooper Christopher Skinner on Interstate 81 near Binghamton around noon Thursday.

Upton was taken into custody after a police dog tracked him into nearby woods, where he was found naked. Police say he didn't appear to be drunk or on drugs.

Upton has been arraigned on a first-degree murder charge and jailed without bail. It's unclear if he has a lawyer. He can't be reached for comment in jail.

Police say he told them he was driving to Connecticut to visit his mother.
