New York woman gives birth outside her home; relative thinks it's an April Fools' Day prank

WHITESBORO, N.Y. – A woman has given birth in front of her New York home — and it wasn't the April Fools' Day joke one relative thought it was.

The Observer-Dispatch of Utica reports (http://bit.ly/1jAa8K3 ) that Jill Esford's contractions started late Monday night at her home in Whitesboro.

Her husband, John, says he was attempting to get her in the car for the drive to the hospital when she told him the baby was coming. He called 911, and a dispatcher provided birthing directions.

Jill's mother arrived in time to assist the birth of the couple's third child, 8-pound, 5-ounce Giovanni. Emergency crews arrived soon after and took mother and child to the hospital.

While driving to the hospital, John says he called his sister-in-law to give her the news. She thought he was pulling a prank.
