NEWARK, N.J. – Authorities say a New Jersey man who was fleeing police in a car hit a 79-year-old woman as she pushed her dog in a baby carriage.
The Essex County Prosecutor's Office said Friday 20-year-old Nathaniel Young, of Rahway, was charged with eluding police, assault with a vehicle and leaving the scene of an accident.
Officials say Young did not stop after police spotted him speeding Thursday, and he struck a Mercury Sable then hit the woman near Branch Brook Park.
The woman was hospitalized in critical condition. The dog, described as fluffy and white with a bow in its hair, was not injured.
Officials say the woman transported the dog in the carriage because it was old.
It's not clear whether Young has an attorney who could comment on his behalf.
