A Maryland woman who survived a plunge off the Chesapeake Bay Bridge after a crash says she swam to safety after deciding she didn't want to die.

Maryland Transportation Authority Police say Morgan Lake's car was hit by a tractor trailer on Friday, sending it off the bridge and into the water 40 feet below.

The Calvert County says she thought she was drowning, but decided she "didn't want to go out that way." She relaxed, unbuckled her seatbelt and swam out. She climbed onto some rocks and waited for help. The 22-year-old College of Southern Maryland student says she is in pain but she suffered just bumps and bruises.

Police said no charges had been filed.
