FORT WORTH, Texas – Authorities say the lives of two young people with dramatically different backgrounds intersected violently on the Austin campus of the University of Texas.
Eighteen-year-old victim Haruka Weiser was a dance major from Oregon with plans to study medicine.
The suspect in her killing, 17-year-old runaway Meechaiel Khalil Criner, was intellectually disabled, abandoned by his mother as an infant and in Texas foster care.
Weiser's body was found Tuesday in a creek near the alumni center.
Authorities took Criner into custody without incident Thursday at an emergency homeless shelter. He is jailed in Travis County on a $1 million bond.
His grandmother in Texarkana, Texas, says she plans to travel to Austin on Monday.
