Kentucky Woman Charged With Murder After Pregnant Woman Found Dead

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. -- A southern Kentucky woman has been charged with murder and kidnapping after a hospital reported a suspicious birth and a pregnant woman was found dead, authorities said Thursday.

Officials said 33-year-old Kathy Michelle Coy of Morgantown remained in the Warren County Jail in Bowling Green on Thursday afternoon. Kentucky State Trooper Jonathan Biven said the charges stem from the death of 21-year-old Jamie Stice of Bowling Green, who was pregnant.

Biven said the hospital called police around 5:50 p.m. CDT Wednesday to report a suspicious birth. Troopers went to a wooded area in the Oakland community and found Stice's body, Biven said, without elaborating.

Biven said troopers interviewed Coy at The Medical Center at Bowling Green. Around 4:30 a.m. CDT Thursday, troopers arrested Coy. Biven would not comment on the status of the baby or what led investigators to Stice's remains.

Doris Thomas, a spokeswoman for the hospital, declined to comment and referred questions to Kentucky State Police.

Warren County Commonwealth's Attorney Chris Cohron told the Daily News of Bowling Green the death penalty is under consideration in the case.

"Due to the possibility of this being a death penalty case, that's why she's being held without bond," Cohron told The Associated Press. Cohron did not elaborate.

Public defender Renee Tuck, who represents Coy, did not immediately return a call from The Associated Press on Thursday. A call to a number listed for Coy in Glasgow went unanswered Thursday afternoon.

Kevin Kirby with the Warren County Coroner's Office said the autopsy for Stice was done Thursday and a report should be ready Friday.

A preliminary hearing is scheduled for 1 p.m. CDT Tuesday in Warren County District Court.
