A woman has been wounded in an exchange of gunfire during a traffic stop with a trooper.

Alaska State Troopers spokeswoman Megan Peters says the shooting erupted Sunday evening on the Sterling Highway near Happy Valley.

She says an Alaska Wildlife Trooper pulled over a woman in a yellow SUV for allegedly driving erratically.

But the woman began shooting and the trooper returned fire.

The woman fled in her vehicle but eventually stopped in the middle of the roadway where she later surrendered.

Peters says the wounded motorist was rushed to a Homer hospital. There was no further word on her injuries. The trooper was unhurt.

The highway is closed to most traffic until about 1 a.m. Monday.
