PHOENIX – Authorities say two cars collided head-on in an outlying area of metropolitan Phoenix, leaving five people dead.
Maricopa County Sheriff's Office spokesman Chris Hegstrom says the crash happened Sunday night in the Sun Lakes area on the southern fringe of the metro area.
Hegstrom says four people died at the scene and a fifth person died after being taken to a hospital.
According to Hegstrom, speed and alcohol may be factors.
Hegstrom says four of those killed were in a car westbound on Hunt Highway and that the fifth was in a car heading east.
Identities of the victims were not released and no other details were immediately available.
Sun Lakes is roughly 20 miles southeast of downtown Phoenix.
