A escalator at a New Jersey train station suddenly switched directions Monday morning, causing a panic and injuring five people.
Port Authority of New York and New Jersey tells Fox News that five people says the escalator malfunctioned Monday shortly after 9 a.m. at the Exchange Place PATH station in Jersey City, N.J.
The injuries were non-life threatening, but three people were taken to a local hospital for precautionary checks.
Nick Lukish, of Brooklyn, N.Y., says he was headed to work and midway up the escalator when the moving staircase started going down.
The 33-year-old says he saw a stampede of people at the base while others jumped on an adjacent escalator.
Lukish says he sustained cuts and bruises.
Two of the station's three escalators have been shut down.
