A 10th grade student died and three other students were injured in a knife attack Wednesday morning at Spring High School in southeast Texas in what may have been a gang-related incident, MyFoxHouston.com reported.
The stabbings happened during a fight between several students in a school corridor. The Harris County Sheriff's Office said 17-year-old student Luis Alonzo Alfaro pulled a knife during the fight and fatally stabbed one student and wounded three others.
Alfaro admitted to the stabbing under questioning by sheriff's homicide detectives and was charged with murder, the Sheriff's Office said in a statement released Wednesday evening.
"There is some information that this may have been gang related," Adrian Garcia, the Harris County Sheriff, said.
Authorities provided few details on what may have led to the fight, and no other information was available on the teenager who was killed.
The sheriff said that the body of the victim who died remained in the school cafeteria. The three other victims who suffered injuries during the altercation were treated at a hospital and later discharged.
One student reportedly posted a photo of blood on what appears to be the school's floor on her Twitter account.
A woman inside the school told MyFoxHouston.com she heard commotion coming from the Spring High School cafeteria, which was followed shortly by a announcement over the intercom calling for a school nurse.
She said she walked outside in the hallway all she saw a blood trail lead from the cafeteria to the back of the school.
The Chronicle's report pointed out that the school, that holds 3,000 students, does not have a metal detector on its campus. School district officials have canceled classes at the high school for the rest of the week.
