Mainstream media's coverage of the Zimmerman trial

SEAN HANNITY, HOST: Long before this trial even began, George Zimmerman was already convicted by the so-called journalists in the mainstream media. But you don't have to take our word for it. All you need to do is look at how the trial is being covered by other news outlets.

Joining me now to react to this and much more, the always outspoken columnist Ann Coulter. Before I get to your column, when they edited, is he black, white or Hispanic -- NBC, they are going to pay big for that. Don't you think?

ANN COULTER, "MUGGED" AUTHOR: I hope they do. It's outrageous. This is the way the media always is. This is an unbelievable illustration of my last book, "Mugged: Racial Demagoguery from '70s to Obama." New York went through this on a monthly basis in the '70s, generally led by Al Sharpton. The thesis of my book was once the O.J. trial, once he was acquitted and you had lots of black people cheering, white America said screw it, we're done. That was the end of it a long time but Obama appears on the scene. They want to gin up the racial demagoguery machinery, but we live in a world where there isn't equal justice. This case would never have been brought if the races were reversed, and they go around saying it's the reverse of that.

HANNITY: You compare it to the Duke Lacrosse case. Why?

COULTER: They need this fake case of how racist America is out to try and rape and murder black people. We have to go back two books to my book "Guilty." No, this is the attack of the victims. We have a society -- I think another important point to consider when we're watching this nonsense is that we have a society where people are not equal before the law. There is a pecking order based on race, back to the old southern codes. George Zimmerman, what, he's an eighth black, half Peruvian, but he counts as a white Hispanic. So he's below an African-American. We'll have to go back to the confederate codes to figure out who has the most rights.

Now, keep that in mind as Congress considers whether to bring in 30 more Democratic voters of different races. That's fantastic to have a complete tower of babble in a country where we do not have equality before the law.

HANNITY: You mentioned CNN, they called him a white Hispanic. AP calls him a self-proclaimed Hispanic. We saw his parents in the trial.

COULTER: I saw that! Well, I'm a self-proclaimed African-American, so I want extra rights here.

HANNITY: Would you have said that about Obama? I guess I want to get it right. His mother was white --

COULTER: Kenyan.

HANNITY: -- wise guy. His father was part black and his mother was white.

COULTER: Yes, he is half Kenyan. The other network coverage on this, it is as if even the lawyers on the other networks -- and they talk differently when they come on your show by the way. It's as if they think what has to be shown in this trial is George Zimmerman has to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that he did not engage in racial profiling.

No, just a little word to the wise. It's not illegal for a private citizen to racially profile. It's not illegal to follow someone. It's certainly is not illegal when you have a concealed carry permit in Florida to have a gun on you.

The burden of proof 100 percent is on the prosecution. They have to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that the self-defense claim was not legitimate. You do not need to have a scratch on you to fear death or imminent harm which is why it's kind of insane for people to say, no, no, no, I don't think he'll be convicted on second degree murder, but will be on manslaughter. The self-defense claim, each one of those is exactly the same. If was in fear, in fear of --

HANNITY: Bodily harm.

COULTER: Bodily harm, then Trayvon doesn't have had to have laid a finger on him. As you have pointed out night after night, we saw from his head being smashed, and today the prosecution basically admitted Trayvon was on top. Now his argument was yes, but was he backing away?

HANNITY: We're running out of time. Does it bother you, it bothers me, they overcharge and get to lower the charge to manslaughter to give the jury options and they hope the jury cuts the difference. Does that bother you, that practice?

COULTER: Yes, they need to prove their case beyond a reasonable doubt. The media, these first confirmation photos of the victim. Right back to the Bernie Goetz case, I remember that, I see all these pictures of little kids, I thought, "Oh my gosh, Bernie Goetz shot four 11-year-olds?" Can we see the real pictures, media? You are ginning up a racial incident.
