Las Vegas Mayor Won't Meet With Obama

Raising the Stakes

Las Vegas Independent Mayor Oscar Goodman says he will not meet with President Obama during his visit to Sin City unless he clarifies his recent remarks about people not spending money in Las Vegas.

Goodman says he would only change his mind "if and when he gives us a proper explanation that he won't make references to Las Vegas in a derogatory manner."

Nevada politicians have been upset over the president's comments earlier this month when he told a New Hampshire audience: "You don't go blow a bunch of cash on Vegas when you're trying to save for college." That was the second time the president upset Nevadans, by cautioning people about spending money in Vegas.

U.N.-Able to Continue

And the United Nations top climate change official is stepping down. Yvo de Boer will leave as doubts about climate change science increase, and just five months before 193 nations reconvene in Mexico for another attempt to agree on a global warming treaty.

He denies his decision to quit is a result of frustration with the Copenhagen summit where leaders failed to reach a binding agreement. But de Boer tells the Associated Press: "Copenhagen wasn't what I had hoped it would be." De Boer is moving into the private sector.
