Samsung has more tablets than a family-size bottle of aspirin and each one shoots for a particular niche. The new Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 is clearly targeted at the middle of the market with a design change and a software update, but no real improvement in the hardware specs over last year's Galaxy Tab 10.1.
Like its predecesor, the Galaxy Tab 10.1 has a dual-core 1-GHz CPU (make and model not disclosed) and a 1280 x 800 screen. On the back side sits a measly 3-MP camera with a mere VGA front-facer. It has a gunmetal gray aesthetic instead of the all white one found on the Galaxy Tab 10.1, but its main difference is its Ice Cream Sandwich operating system.
Samsung has added some of its TouchWiz elements to the Galaxy Tab 2 10.1. A small box-shaped icon that sits next to the layers button in the lower right corner of the screen and takes a screenshot when you tap it. When the screen shot appears you can scribble on it in different colors, just as you would on the Galaxy Note 10.1, only without a pen.
There's no word yet on pricing or availability for the Galaxy Tab 2 10.1, but a Samsung rep explained that this is a "mass market device" that's intended to hit a wider and therefore more value-conscious audience than the original Galaxy Tab 10.1. Hopefully, if this is the value option, Samsung also has a high-end device up its sleeve.
