Driving a pickup truck as a fashion statement may be the vehicular equivalent of wearing a Members Only jacket these days, but there are a lot of people who still need them for what they originally were designed to do: haul stuff.

Lost among the doom and gloom of July’s dismal automobile sales reports was that the Ford F-150 reclaimed the top spot on the charts from those pesky little cars and hybrids everyone wants lately. This most American of automobiles is down, but it is far from out.

Still, contractors and campers aren’t immune from record gasoline prices, and no one is about to argue about a little relief at the pump, so FOX Car Report is taking a look at the five most fuel-efficient pickups on sale.

All of these trucks come in a variety of configurations -- crew cab, extended bed, etc. -- so we based our results on the highest mileage version of each model. Across the board that means 2-wheel drive and a minimum amount of cargo-hauling capacity.

You can still have it, you just can’t have it all.
