Talking Points: Condit Should Resign

All kinds of reaction to my call for Congressman Condit to resign. And that is the subject of this evening's Talking Points memo.

Once again, America finds itself confronted with tawdry behavior by a powerful politician. And once again, many Americans do not understand the importance of the story. This is not about sex. The Clinton impeachment was not about sex. This is about honesty and cruelty. For Mr. Clinton, it was about undermining the justice system.

Talking Points wants to be perfectly clear. Powerful men having sex with young women is not new and it's not important. The suffering of a family, whose daughter may have been murdered, is extremely important. By lying about his affair, Congressman Condit brought immense pain to the family of Chandra Levy. For that alone, he should be forced out of office. He's simply not fit to serve this country in the House of Representatives.

But here's the bigger story: the silence of elected officials on the matter. Where is the outrage in Washington over Condit's behavior? Where is the pressure for him to resign? Isn't there anyone in Washington who cares about the Levy family? Isn't there anyone angry about Condit's lying and deceiving in a possible murder case? Apparently not, because our leaders of both parties are afraid to say anything. Again, our leaders are afraid that speaking out might hurt them politically. That is the harsh reality. America has become a country led by wimps, manipulators and excuse makers. Our standards of behavior have plummeted to depressing depths. The whole thing is outrageous.

Once again, Talking Points would like to state, there's no reason on this Earth that Gary Condit should continue to serve in the House. He has done a terrible thing by not helping the Levy family immediately, after Chandra disappeared. Condit is a coward, a liar and a shameful example to every young person in America. He should resign immediately. And the rest of them down on the Hill should be ashamed for not calling for that resignation. That's the memo.

Most Ridiculous Item of the Day

Time now for the "Most Ridiculous Item of the Day." That Steven Spielberg movie A.I.: Artificial Intelligence is a bomb at the box office, shocking many Hollywood poobahs. In its second week at the box office, the film dropped 52 percent from its opening weekend, and that's not good. In fact, that's ridiculous.
