Monchengladbach, Germany (SportsNetwork.com) - United States international and Hoffenheim defender Fabian Johnson will join Monchengladbach this summer on a free transfer.

Johnson moved to Hoffenheim from Wolfsburg in 2011, but his contract expires at the end of the current campaign, allowing him to move to Monchengladbach on a free transfer.

"Fabian Johnson is a very interesting player, moreover he is a free agent, who can play at left back and at left midfield. We are delighted that he has opted to play for us," Monchengladbach sporting director Max Eberl said.

The 26-year-old has agreed to a contract with Monchengladbach that will run until 2018 after he indicated earlier this month that he would not be re- signing with Hoffenheim.

In 91 Bundesliga matches Johnson has tallied six goals with 12 assists and has earned 18 caps for the United States in his international career.
