HOUSTON – Fred Sturdivant scored 24 points, grabbed six rebounds and had five blocked shots to lead Texas Southern to a Southwestern Conference regular season title with a 78-59 rout over Alcorn State on Saturday night.
Texas Southern (17-14, 16-2 Southwestern) built a 39-27 lead by halftime and used a 10-1 run to begin the second half to put the Braves away early. The Tigers shot 51 percent from the field, hitting seven 3-pointers and knocking down 19 of 26 free-throw attempts. Texas Southern had 19 assists as a team.
Omar Strong chipped in with 18 points for the Tigers and Madarious Gibbs had 11 points and pulled eight rebounds.
Marquiz Baker led Alcorn State (10-23, 8-10) with 22 points including four 3-pointers and LeAntwan Luckett had 13 points and four assists. The Braves shot just 39 percent from the field and were 4 of 15 from beyond the arc.
