ORANGEBURG, S.C. – Brandon Riley's layup at the buzzer lifted South Carolina State to a 71-69 win over Maryland-Eastern Shore on Saturday in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference opener for both teams.
The Bulldogs (5-9), who snapped a five-game losing streak, overcame a 10-point second-half deficit to tie the score at 67 with 1:02 left on two free throws by Tyvon Williams.
Presano Bell and Darnell Porter each hit 1 of 2 free throws for a 69-67 South Carolina State lead with 14 seconds to go.
Kevin White made a layup with 8 seconds on the clock to tie it at 71, then Riley hit his game-winner.
Porter led the Bulldogs with 14 points, Bell had 13 and Riley 10.
The Hawks (3-11) were paced by Hillary Haley with 23 points on 9-for-15 shooting and nine rebounds.
Maryland-Eastern Shore outshot South Carolina State from the field 48.1 percent (26 of 54) to 41.1 percent (23 of 56).
