Red Sox place Ellsbury on DL

Boston, MA – Boston Red Sox outfielder Jacoby Ellsbury has been placed on the 15-day disabled list because of a shoulder injury.

"Jacoby injured his right shoulder during yesterday's game," the Red Sox said in a statement. "An MRI was performed and showed findings consistent with a subluxed shoulder. We are in the process of gathering further information and determining the treatment plan."

Ellsbury was hurt in the fourth inning against Tampa Bay while trying to break up a double play. As he slid into second base, Rays shortstop Reid Brignac fell and landed on Ellsbury's right arm.

Reports on Friday indicated that Ellsbury could be sidelined for six-to-eight weeks.

In seven games this season, Ellsbury was batting just .192 with five hits in 26 at-bats.

Ellsbury was an All-Star for the first time in 2011 and also won a Silver Slugger Award while claiming his first Gold Glove. He batted .321 with 32 homers and 105 runs batted in, earning the American League Comeback Player of the Year honor following an injury-filled 2010 campaign.

The Red Sox are expected to recall outfielder Che-Hsuan Lin from Triple-A Pawtucket to fill the roster spot. Lin, twice the Boston organization's minor league defensive player of the year, has never appeared in a big league game and was batting .150 in six games with the PawSox in 2012.
