The San Francisco 49ers have signed Frank year contract extension, saying it was their goal all along to allow the running back to play his entire NFL career with the team.

"We are extremely pleased to have accomplished this," general manager Trent Baalke said in a statement Wednesday when the deal was announced.

Financial terms of the contract weren't disclosed, but reports on Tuesday said it was worth $21 million with $13.5 million guaranteed.

"Frank's love for the Bay Area community, play on the field and leadership within the locker room are equaled only by his passion for the game," Baalke added, also thanking the running back's agents.

Gore, 28, finished last season on injured reserve after fracturing his right hip in a Monday night win over the Arizona Cardinals in Week 12. He rushed for 853 yards and three touchdowns in 11 games and caught 46 passes for 452 yards and two more scores before going down.

The injury prevented Gore, a third-round draft pick by the 49ers in 2005, from reaching 1,000 yards rushing for a fifth straight season.

The former Miami Hurricane has rushed for 6,414 yards and 35 touchdowns, and scored nine more TDs through the air in 84 games with the 49ers.

His 6,414 rushing yards rank third on the 49ers' all-time list.
