New York, NY – New York Rangers forward Carl Hagelin has been suspended three games and Ottawa Senators forward Matt Carkner was sentenced to a one-game ban for separate incidents during Game 2 of their Eastern Conference quarterfinal series.
Just 2:15 into Saturday's game, Carkner sought out Rangers forward Brian Boyle along the boards and instigated a fight that Boyle did not participate in. Boyle was quickly knocked to the ice after several punches, and Carkner did not stop throwing haymakers until officials intervened.
Carkner was assessed a minor penalty for instigating, a major penalty for fighting and a game misconduct.
Midway through the second period, Hagelin went up high on Daniel Alfredsson and caught the Senators forward with an elbow to the head. Alfredsson was injured on the play, and Hagelin was called for a major penalty.
The Rangers announced they will not seek an appeal of the ruling, but did not exactly agree with decision.
"The New York Rangers accept the NHL's three-game suspension of Carl Hagelin and will not pursue an appeal. However, we are thoroughly perplexed in the ruling's inconsistency with other supplementary discipline decisions that have been made throughout this season and during the playoffs. We will have no further comment on this decision." the team statement read.
The series resumes on Monday in Ottawa knotted at a game apiece.
